Outdoorsmans Optics Hunter Pack System

The key to the Outdoorsmans Pack System is the frame. The curvature allows the pack to ride as close to your center of gravity as possible, giving you the stability of an internal frame, but the carrying capacity of the external frame. The carbon fiber reinforced polypropylene frame is rigid enough in the vertical plane to handle a 200 lb. load, yet is flexible enough to twist with your body while climbing or twisting through brush.  The bag itself is attached at eight different points with easily inserted buckles. The bag covers a meat carrying system that is tucked neatly against the frame so you can convert your hunting pack into a meat packer in less than two minutes.  We call the current bag the “optics hunters pack” because it is perfect for someone who is carrying a tripod, spotting scope, or large binoculars.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE FEATURES OF THIS AMAZING PACK SYSTEM:

  • The frame weighs just 2 lbs and the complete pack weighs 7 lbs 3 3/4 oz with 4600 cubic inches of storage.
  • Notice the dozens of attaching points for the suspension system; we have set this pack up for sportsmen from 5’2″ all the way up to 6’10″.
  • Underneath each pack bag is a load carrying system that is part
of the frame. This is ideal for meat packing or caching food and water for those long hunts.
  • The V notch rifle rest in the top of the frame allows for a solid rest while shooting from the sitting position due to the solid base of the frame/pack system.
  • The rifle carrying system is built right into every pack and securely
holds any size rifle, bow, or muzzleloader.
  • The Outdoorsmans Pack System shoulder straps and hip belt are large enough to properly distribute the weight of even the heaviest loads.

    Here is what we found!

Here at Hunters Journey Magazine we have a fixation for hunting deep in the wilderness. With each hunt comes hours of preparation. During the preparation process we spend hours weighing and packing each individual item and going over our list to make sure that we have everything!

While proper gear selection is crucial there is one item that I would consider the most overlooked, and that is the backpack. In my early years I went with the cheapest I could find. I wish that I could have all  my money back that I wasted on substandard packs. By purchasing the right pack the first time I would have encountered a more feasible outcome.

Last spring was a turning point in my life. I suffered back pain to the point of having my significant other call the paramedics for me when I found myself stranded in the flower bed unable to move from the waist down. I was diagnosed with chronic sciatica caused from a weak L5 and a bulging L3. Right then I thought that my hunting days were numbered. Only those who live on the edge would understand the feeling that my life was over in the blink of an eye.

Persistence is what puts meat in the freezer. That very persistence is exactly what I would need to put myself back in the game. Throughout my dramatic physical therapy sessions I would spend countless hours researching THE pack that would take me where I needed to go. I knew that my internal frame was not going to provide the stability that I would require. Shifting weight under the heavy stress of elk meat was sure to take me out. Rigid frame packs would definitely not allow me to move in the manner that I needed  for proper body positioning. The search was on.

My search lead me to the Outdoormans Optics Hunter. The Optics Hunter ended up taking me deep into the back country of Idaho and lived up to all of its claims. The flexible external frame provided the stability of an external pack, however was flexible enough to allow me to bend as I needed for proper positioning.

Throughout the entire season we were fortunate enough to have harvested 5 elk. I am happy to say that I felt just as good on the last step of my hunt as I did on my first. Not only was the frame system a key factor, but my shoulders felt great due to the generously padded shoulders and waist belt.

I can’t wait to personally check out the new Outdoorsman Packs! These packs should not be overlooked…
